Join us December 6 - February 7 for a chance to see these breathtaking
Landscape images in large format.

RECEPTION
December 10, 5-7 pm

Last Week!

The last week to get in and view the new work by local artist Annie Swincinski. Traditionally a print maker, Annie has decided to step out of her box and create a body of large format canvas paintings that were done in true metallic pigments. These paintings then underwent and oxidation process to reveal breathtaking hues of patina and rust. December 5 is the last day so come on out.

New Zola Artist

Join Us at Zola New World Bistro for the latest collection of paintings by Sarah Anne Graham. They will be on display at the gallery from August 9 - October 11 2009. The artist reception will be held on August 27 from 5-6 o'clock

This is Sarah's first Zola Exhibit and I am just delighted to hang her work. Its a truly refreshing style and subject matter not previously seen in State College PA. Im going to attempt to describe them in my own words as having a realistic surrealism to them. She seems to tell a story with out completion leaving space for the viewer to interpret and contemplate.

That is all for now but stay tuned for more information about Sara and perhaps a small preview of the show.

Artist Reception

Shelly's Exhibit was very well received at her reception on July 1st.

Fantastic Food! Great Service! Fine Brew! Many friends! Lots & Lots of FUN.

Here are a few pics in case you missed it.

Here is a peek!

Her dynamic angles turn everyday subjects into fine art.

a personal favorite

a hint of the abstract

Beautifully done and reminiscent of Georgia O'Keeffe

Shelly Myers

The current Exhibit at the gallery is photographer and State College local Shelly Myers.

On display you'll find a variety of prints from her digital Photography collection that explore the natural and architectural elements that surround her at home and during her travels.

Using nice mix of Black and white as well as color photographs, Shelly seems to reserve the black and white for architectural photos and utilize the color to capture the amazing spectrum we find in our natural surroundings. I can't honestly say this is done on purpose but it certainly suits the subject matter well.

Her exhibit will run from June 15 - August 9.

Documentary

Here is a fantastic documentary video about Joe and his process.

Lets Talk Texture

detail image from "Santa Fe Gift" acrylic on fiberglass screen

The most stunning of details in Joe's Paintings are the extreme textures that are created with this experimental process. I won't be showing any works in their entirety on the blog quite yet. Instead just a few detail images of multiple pieces. Images that showcase texture. I hope to eventually focus on the pieces one at time in future posts.

detail NO. 1 is from "Turning Point" acrylic on aluminum

detail NO.2 is from "50's Scheme" acrylic on aluminum

detail NO.3 is from a large format piece entitled "The Elements" acrylic on fiberglass screen

The Process

The canvas is replaced with aluminum panel and the painting occurs underwater, over a period of time. Contemporary elements of time, temperature, and chance combine with sedimentation and evaporation processes to create works that give the artist a variety of new roles to pursue in the creative act. Many works are created outdoors, allowing temperature to play a role in the process. Pieces created during the winter months introduce actual frost patterns as compositional elements. Artistic control and aesthetic choices are co-opted by the process, varying the artist’s tasks as catalyst, facilitator, editor and at times, spectator.

This give and take makes for an exciting method of discovery where the visual product has many possibilities, but none can be assured or guaranteed. When nature imposes its will on the materials at hand, new twists develop, creating additional avenues to explore.

What happens once a panel is submerged is often entirely different from the assumed result.

“Some of my favorite pieces are those that paint themselves. The less they are interfered with and manipulated, the purer and often more beautiful they are. As a work begins it’s life underwater, the stage is set to allow nature’s quiet energies to become visible, giving form to processes that are as old as time.”

Another approach to art making on display here at Zola emphasizes a more traditional hands on approach, but the canvas is replaced this time with fiberglass screen.

The Artist

Joe Beddall, a local artist residing in State College, is a graduate of Kutztown University with a BS in Art Education. Further studies in printmaking and pottery were undertaken in the Washington DC area at Northern Virginia Community College and Hinckley Pottery Studio.

The challenge to create truly innovative art today has led to the exploration of various elements and processes available to artists. One approach to art making I have explored has focused on the creative process itself, giving that process an additional function as content of the work. By harnessing various energies and elements of nature I have developed techniques that, at first glance, appear to represent conventional abstract paintings. But closer scrutiny reveals a visual product having little in common with traditional brush on canvas paintings. I call this process Waterworks. ”
